Living Off-Grid

More Power To You

Koro Island has no public power grid or municipal water supply — which is part of what keeps it unspoiled. Every home generates its own electricity and collects its own water. It sounds daunting, but the systems are simple, reliable, and well understood by local builders.

Solar Power

Solar is the primary power source for nearly every home on Koro. Panels charge a battery bank through a charge controller, which regulates the charge and protects the batteries; an inverter then converts that stored power into standard household electricity. Sized correctly, a solar system runs lights, refrigeration, water pumps, and everyday appliances with no need for a generator.

Water Catchment

With no municipal water supply, homes collect rain from their own roofs. Water runs off the roof into gutters, through a first-flush diverter and filter to remove debris, and into a storage tank — typically sized to carry a household through Koro’s short dry spells. From there it’s gravity-fed or pumped to taps just like any mains-connected home.
